Discover 101

I. Broad Purpose of the Course

This class introduces new first-year students to Marymount University and to learning in higher education. Through the course theme, you engage in inquiry learning and develop intellectual skills and attitudes essential for success in college and for lifelong learning. Participating in a variety of activities with the support of your peer mentor, instructor, and classmates, you improve your understanding of the intellectual, emotional, and social challenges of University life and apply this knowledge to yourself.

II. Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course you will show academic and personal development and a higher level of community engagement:

1. Academic Objectives

a. Select a current problem or issue for inquiry.

b. Develop a plan and goal for the inquiry.

c. Gather and analyze information needed.

d. Demonstrate oral communication skills in presenting inquiry results.

e. Communicate accurately, clearly, and coherently through written summary of your inquiry results.

2. Personal Objectives

a. Demonstrate personal development in adjusting to college life.

b. Display growth in academic and personal responsibility.

c. Identify University resources supporting academic and personal needs.

d. Experience community engagement outside the classroom with faculty and peers.

III. Teaching Method

This class involves interactive discussion, group work in and outside of class, and interaction with the professor and the peer mentor.
